The Colts: From Super Bowl Champs to Ringless

The New England Patriots have won five Super Bowl championships, while the Indianapolis Colts have only won two. However, the colts do hold the record for most appearances, competing in their game seven times—including this year’s game which will be held February 5th (2013).

While the Patriots have won more championships than any other NFL franchise in history, many football fans will say that this year is the first time they were actually considered “the best team” in decades. Some argue that they are not even one of the best teams in their own division, much less the NFL.

The Patriots only have two rings compared to the Colts seven appearances, but can it be said that they are better? It will all come down to how you judge success in professional sports.

The Colts

The Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

They currently compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The Colts were one of three NFL teams to join those of the American Football League (AFL) to form the AFC following the 1970 merger. While in Baltimore for one season they won the 1971 World Championship. They moved to Indianapolis in 1984 and have since won one Super Bowl (Super Bowl XLI) and two AFC championships (2006 and 2009).

The Colts, as the NFL franchise representing Indianapolis, Indiana, started out in Baltimore, Maryland with a team that had no official nickname but were widely known as the “Baltimore Colts”. The 1953–54 Baltimore Colts were one of the few NFL teams to have an official marching band, and also owned a horse with which they toured the country.

he team later became the “Baltimore” “Colts”, after it was decided that having a unique nickname could be beneficial to marketing, but wanted to keep the name “Colts” because it had been so successful. The name and logo have since been used for the Indianapolis Colts.
